On May 20 at 10.00 in Hall 8 of the National Palace of Culture, a Round Table "1700 years EDICT OF TOLERANCE (Serdica, 311 AD)" was held, entitled: The beginning of the path of religious tolerance in Europe starts from Sofia.
In 311 in Serdica - one of the temporary capitals of the Eastern Roman Empire, Emperor Galerius, who was August for this part of the state, issued the so-called Edict of Tolerance. The edict was issued a few days before the emperor's death from a serious illness. It officially ended the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire and set a new civilized beginning for the future development of the whole world. The edict also determined the further development of religious policy in the empire, which led to the issuance of the famous Edict of Milan in 313.
The round table was attended by some of the most prominent researchers in the history of ancient Serdica. Prof. Giorgio Barone Adezi, who is a professor of Roman and canon law at universities in Rome and southern Italy, and also an archimandrite from the Vatopedi monastery on Mount Athos, spoke specifically about the Edict of Tolerance. He is one of the most famous scholars, who dedicated his work to Late Antiquity and the mutual relations of the Pristina church and the state, respectively the legal regulation of these relations. Prof. Malina Novkirishka, a lecturer in Roman law at the Faculty of Law at Sofia University, presented a report on the legal aspects of the Edict of the Gallery. Assoc. Prof. Veselina Vachkova from the Faculty of History at Sofia University, a lecturer at the National High School for Ancient Languages and Cultures in Sofia, talks about the historical situation surrounding the issuance of the Edict and the mint of Ancient Serdica at the beginning of the 4th century. A reconstruction of the ancient city of Serdica was shown in 3D.
